We wanted to tell you a little more about the talented designer behind our 2018 cover image gown, and we are excited to share more of the creative mind of Anne Bertossi from Paddington Weddings. Brisbane designer Anne Bertossi is one of Australia’s most well regarded and inspirational bridal couture creators and many of her gorgeous gowns are chosen for weddings here on our beautiful Sunshine Coast.

2017 marked a special time for multi award winning Brisbane wedding dress designer Anne Bertossi; she has been designing and creating stunning classical bridal gowns for 25 years here in Australia. Anne is one of the few real ‘Couture’ bridal designers in Brisbane where her gowns are individually created for her brides and 100% Australian made in her store in Paddington, Queensland

Here’s a little more Q and A with Anne Bertossi from Paddington Weddings:

  • Tell us the story behind your brand?

I started the Bertossi Brides label 25 years ago this year. I grew up surrounded by sewing, my father was a fantastic pattern maker and my mother Josie, who still works in the business today, is an amazing seamstress. After moving to Australia, I worked in a bridal store and noticed the gowns were made in hot, heavy polyesters which would have been horrible to wear in the harsh Queensland climate. So Bertossi Brides was born, and I started creating simple elegant gowns in pure silks and European laces, crafting elegant dresses that would be comfortable to wear and look amazing. Over the years I have been fortunate to see my brand grow rapidly, but I am very adamant with my vision of creating individual designs locally here in our studio, I have no desire to go down the road of sourcing mass production from off shore locations, and I still fit personally every bride who engages us to create their wedding gown.

  • Can you tell us about your design background?

Growing up in the south of England where I studied fashion and learning the trade from my amazing parents, was the best tuition I could have ever experienced.  From a very young age I knew I wanted to be a designer and have my own label. In the United Kingdom I specialised in corporate and race wear but when I came to Australia I fell in love with the world of bridal.

  • Where is your company based?

Paddington Weddings is based in Paddington, Brisbane and has been for the last 23 years. I fell in love with Paddington and knew it was the perfect place to base my company, our studio operates from a magical workers cottage overlooking Brisbane City.  All of our gowns are created here in Brisbane, nothing is outsourced or made abroad, even the veils and jewellery I stock are from other Australian based companies.

  • How would you define your brand’s style and design?

Simple, elegant and timeless gowns with stylish sophistication.

  • What motivates you when it comes to designing? Where do you seek your inspiration and what inspires you?

It is always about the fabric, this is where I get my inspiration. I regularly travel to Paris and Milan and visit the mills, I absolutely fall in love with the silks and laces and before I get back to my hotel room I will be on the ‘Metro’ with my sketch book to design. I especially love to see how the fabric moulds and drapes and I am a firm believer that you should be true to the fabric and not try and fight it.

  • What do you love most about designing beautiful wedding gowns for brides?

We love to get to know our brides.  Here at Paddington Weddings, we are a family business, I work alongside my mum Josie and sister Gill. When you become a Bertossi bride you become part of our family and during your 5 fittings with us, we not only want to create a stunning gown for you, but also give you wonderful memories to cherish forever as you see your stunning gown come together at each fitting.

  • Tell us about the materials you use and what makes them so special and unique. What fabrics do you absolutely love working with?

I travel to Europe each year to buy the best quality silks and laces available from small boutique mills that have been run by families for decades. They still use looms that are 200 years old and create the fabrics in pure silk and cotton yarn so the fabrics drape beautifully and feel soft against the bride’s skin.

  • How have the trends in bridal fashion evolved since you first established your brand?

We have seen a lot of styles come and go in the world of bridal. From stiff polyester gowns in the 90’s to the invisible tulle gowns only just covering the essentials today. I generally try to avoid all of it, just adding a current feel to my collections, but always designing a timeless elegant style that will never date.

  • What type of bride does your brand appeal to?

Brides who are having an elegant, stylish wedding, whether that be on a romantic beach, in the magical hinterlands or a chic city venue. The great thing about weddings today is they can be whatever you want them to be. Our brides often fly in from all over Australia or from overseas just to become a Bertossi bride, our brand is well known and trusted for its style and quality.

  • What helpful advice would you give to a bride-to-be who is embarking on her journey in finding the perfect wedding dress for her Sunshine Coast Wedding?

Think about the climate! With scenery as amazing as it is at the Sunshine coast both by the ocean and in the hinterland, you will want to be outside enjoying every moment. Our gowns are all pure silk and that really helps to keep you cool on the day if the humidity is high. Pick a gown that reflects you and your personality, just because a gown suits you if you really don’t feel like yourself in it, it’s not your dress, the right gown makes you look and feel amazing. Do your research, both online and in magazines.  Thankfully, today you can find out a lot about a designer from websites and social media pages, read reviews and look at real brides. This can save you a lot of time on your shopping day, narrow down your shopping stops, and enjoy your appointments, don’t feel you must try on every gown in Brisbane or you will drive yourself crazy.
